I was thinking about where could I copy a bit of text about Afro Celt Sound System and I thought what's the point, if you want to read about them go to www.afroceltsoundsystem.net or do a search - there's plenty to read. I thought it made more sense to say what they mean to me. I've called them my favourite band for many years now. When I first starting heard of them at Whirl-Y-Gig I didn't tke much interest as, although I was hugely into a lot of world music, until I heard them I never really had any interest in either African or Celtic music. But every time I heard something of theirs it blew me away. To me it was the material they wrote rather than the style; for me they were a bit like Bob Marley, who I loved even when I really didn't like reggae - in fact from before I'd even heard of reggae! |
I was first put in touch with them by veteran DJ Charlie Gillett, just after their first album came out when I was looking for a producer for Glow and Martin Russell and Simon Emmerson were well up for it but, unfortunately for us, the massive success of that album subsequently turned into a world tour which put the end to that plan. Many years a later and I'm 2 remixes and some other stuff which, at the time of writing, I'm not sure I can talk about yet, into a much closer relationship And if you never go to see any other live band, if you get the chance GO TO A GIG! Amazing!!! |
