Music for Colourspace (2026 Edition)

This music was written for the LA Art '87 showing of Maurice Agis' Colourspace installation. The two different length installation tapes were looped and played simultaneously, overlapping at different intervals throughout the day.
Within the Experience is a mix of those tapes made at the time.
Within the Mind was the proof-of-concept demo which led to the commission - a mix of 4 pairs of improvisations (for each colour) recorded without the benefit of hearing the others, to show that the vocabulary I was using would work with such random interactions (the original plan had been to use four pairs of speakers inside).
Although the installation tapes were not designed to be listened to on their own, and I would be very happy to know that some people might choose to listen to them together, they do work as independent, properly composed, pieces of music and I'm sure will actually appeal more to some people in that form than the two other tracks with their reliance, to a greater or lesser degree, on chance. If you do fancy try the combination of the two don't be put off by not having the 'right' equipment. Sure, inside Colourspace there two pairs of identical speakers crossing each other but try anything, eg. listen to one tape on speakers, one on headphones.

The original version of the album was released on cassette in 1988, without including the installation tapes. In 2003 I digitized the 8-track tapes and released all parts on CD though the quality I got from old tapes on an old tape machine was not great. These new restorations, mixes and masters improve dramatically on those versions.
